August is the heart of summer around Rochester. Sunflowers are blooming, blueberries are ready to pick, and the warm evenings make it easy to stay out for a boat ride, concert, or sunset by the lake.
It is also fair and festival season, with county fairs and agricultural celebrations taking place across Western New York and the Finger Lakes. Whether you want an easy evening outing or a full-day drive, these are ten of my favorite ways to enjoy the month.

1. Wander Through Spectacular Sunflower Fields
Sunflower season is brief, usually lasting only a few weeks, but the fields are spectacular while in bloom. Sunflower farms around Rochester offer everything from simple walk-through fields to festivals featuring food trucks, music, and evening hours. Check each farm’s bloom report before leaving home, especially if you plan to take photos.
2. Take a Scenic Boat Tour
August is prime time for getting out on the water. Boat tours across the region offer a relaxed way to see the landscapes that define Western New York—from Erie Canal cruises and Genesee River outings to sightseeing trips on the Finger Lakes or Lake Ontario. Whether you prefer a narrated history cruise or a sunset sail, these tours reveal the beauty of our waterways from a new perspective.
Canal communities like Fairport, Pittsford, and Brockport are especially lively in August, when boats, cyclists, and outdoor diners fill the waterfront.
3. Go Stargazing Under August Skies
Warm August nights are perfect for stargazing. Drive away from city lights to locations northeast of Rochester along Lake Ontario or south of US-20 in the Finger Lakes, where the skies grow dramatically darker. Bring a blanket, watch for meteor showers, and let the quiet of the countryside reveal the Milky Way overhead. If you are out before dawn later in the month, look east for Orion’s Belt returning to the sky.
Mid-August also brings the Perseid meteor shower, one of the year’s most reliable celestial events, when dozens of shooting stars can streak across the sky each hour under dark conditions.
4. Explore the Finger Lakes Region
The Finger Lakes offer some of the most rewarding day trips from Rochester. Eleven long, narrow lakes carved by glaciers are surrounded by vineyards, waterfalls, charming towns, and scenic farmland. August is also peak festival season here. Events like the Skaneateles Festival, Geneva’s Glorious Garlic Festival, and the Pageant of Steam celebrate music, agriculture, and regional traditions. Spend the day exploring lakeside villages, hiking gorge trails, or enjoying live music along the water.
5. Step Back in Time at Genesee Country Village & Museum
Genesee Country Village & Museum in Mumford is the largest living history museum in New York State, with 68 historic buildings spread across 700 acres. August events often include craft demonstrations, historic baseball games, and lively summer programs that bring the 19th century to life. Plan to give yourself several hours here. I enjoy wandering through the village without rushing, stopping wherever a trade demonstration, historic game, garden, or cooking fire catches my attention.
6. Cool Off Along Lake Ontario
Late summer sometimes brings stretches of 90-degree weather, and knowing where to cool off can make all the difference. On the hottest days, build your outing around shade, water, or air-conditioning. Lake Ontario beaches are often cooler than inland parks, while museums offer a dependable escape during the hottest part of the afternoon.
Ontario Beach Park, Hamlin Beach State Park, and Fair Haven Beach State Park are especially refreshing on hot August days when lake breezes cool the shoreline.
7. Pick Your Own Blueberries
Blueberry season stretches through August, making it one of the sweetest late-summer traditions around Rochester. Visit local farms to fill a basket with fresh berries, enjoy the peaceful rhythm of the fields, and bring home fruit perfect for pies, pancakes, and jams.
August also marks the beginning of the late-summer harvest season, when farm stands overflow with sweet corn, tomatoes, peaches, and other fresh produce grown across the region.

8. Chase Roadside Waterfalls—or Visit Niagara Falls
Waterfall chasing is one of the most rewarding summer adventures in Western New York. Many roadside waterfalls can be viewed with minimal hiking, making them ideal for spontaneous stops during a day trip. Or make Niagara Falls State Park your destination. America’s oldest state park surrounds one of the continent’s most powerful natural wonders, just ninety minutes from Rochester.
9. Experience the Great New York State Fair
August is also fair season across Western New York. Young farmers showcase their work at county fairs throughout the region, with some exhibitors continuing on to the Great New York State Fair in Syracuse, where agricultural traditions from across the state come together at the end of the month.
10. Take an Easy Walk Through a Town Park
I often turn to town parks when I want a short walk without planning a full day trip. Channing H. Philbrick Park is one of my favorites for its creekside trail and small cascades, while Cobb’s Hill Park works well for an evening walk around the reservoir. These smaller parks are easy to overlook, which is part of their appeal.
August’s calendar also includes annual celebrations such as the Puerto Rican Festival, Carifest, and the Rochester Ukrainian Festival. Dates and venues may change from year to year, so check the official event websites before making plans.
