Farms & Farmers’ Markets: Your Guide to Locally Grown Produce

Exploring local markets is a great way to immerse yourself in the community and support family farms. You can visit a roadside produce stand, spend time at a U-pick farm, or participate in farm-themed activities. Farm markets offer various options, from simple seasonal produce to opportunities for community-supported agriculture (CSA) and artisanal goods. Some markets even provide events and entertainment. Be sure to check the days and hours of operation for the places you plan to visit.

Agritourism

Rochesterians are fortunate to have two family farms in Monroe County, one on the east side and one on the west side, that offer a day’s worth of farm-themed activities and entertainment. Stokoe and Wickham Farms provide train and wagon rides, low ropes courses, bounce pillows, slides, farm animals, and various food options. But don’t let their similarities dissuade you from visiting them both—each offers a unique experience!

Month-by-Month Locally Grown Harvest

Most of the time, I’m a fan of charts and graphs, but when it comes to harvest seasons, I want to know what I can purchase fresh at that moment. This monthly breakdown has been taken in part from the Department of Agriculture and Markets Harvest Calendar, with the addition of local flowers, Christmas trees, and festivals.

A helpful note from the Department of Agriculture and Markets: The above periods are approximate. Harvest periods may begin a week to ten days earlier during a warmer-than-usual year or new season extension strategies. A cool spring will delay crop maturity. Call farms for exact dates of harvest.

  1. Hi Deb,

Brighton Farmer’s Market has recently built a new building in the town park for their market. I’ve got to get myself over there, since I won’t go into the city for the Public Market. It looks nice. See their Facebook page & web site. The farm market was formerly 2 markets, a separate winter market and the summer market. I was looking at their web site and it does appear they have merged it into one year round market. I lived in Brighton for the first 21 years of my life and am a Brighton grad.

    1. Thank you for the insight, Sue! I didn’t realize that this would be the location for the summer market, too. The website still indicates two locations. I guess we’ll see! Summer Market: Brighton High School parking lot; Winter Market: 1435 Westfall Road
