Read the latest Rochester This Week on Substack

May is when Rochester truly wakes up. Gardens burst into bloom, parks reopen for the season, and canal villages buzz with activity as boats return to the Erie Canal. Outdoor markets fill with flowers and fresh foods, and seasonal events begin appearing across the region. Whether you are wandering through historic landscapes, browsing a massive book sale, or watching hot air balloons rise over Letchworth, May offers some of the most memorable spring experiences around Rochester.

May is the peak of Rochester’s famous spring blooms. Daffodils blanket the hillsides of Mount Hope Cemetery, while magnolias and thousands of fragrant lilacs bloom in Highland Park during the Lilac Festival. Linwood Gardens opens its spectacular tree peony collection for a brief but unforgettable display, and Sonnenberg Gardens in nearby Canandaigua welcomes visitors back beginning May 1. Ellwanger Garden, the historic home garden of Rochester’s pioneering nursery founders, also bursts into bloom for the season.
