Carpenter Falls

Carpenter Falls drops nearly 90 feet over a shelf of Tully limestone into the wooded Bear Swamp Creek gorge near the western shore of Skaneateles Lake.

From the paved parking area at Appletree Point and Carver Roads, an approximately 600-foot accessible boardwalk leads through the woods to an observation platform overlooking the upper falls.

Stone steps descend from the boardwalk to a second viewpoint near the base of the gorge. Visitors return by climbing the same steps. The boardwalk and designated trail protect the gorge’s steep, erosion-prone slopes while making the waterfall easier to experience.

A Longer Hike Through Bahar Nature Preserve

Experienced hikers can continue onto the white-blazed Jug Path, which follows the south rim of the 100-foot-deep gorge through the adjoining Bahar Nature Preserve. Bear Swamp Creek passes several waterfalls on its way toward Skaneateles Lake.

The Jug Path extends approximately 1.1 miles between Carpenter Falls and the preserve. Expect steep, uneven, and potentially slippery terrain, along with about 430 feet of elevation change that must be regained on the return hike.
