Sycamore Hill Gardens

Sycamore Hill Gardens

Just north of Skaneateles in the Finger Lakes region, Sycamore Hill Gardens began as a working dairy farm and now spans nearly 40 acres of curated landscape. The owners reshaped open pasture into deliberate garden rooms—layered perennial borders, reflective ponds, sculptural focal points, and woodland edges—stitched together through decades of hands-on design. What once supported grazing cattle now invites slow wandering through spaces crafted with vision and care.

Owned and cultivated by George and Karen Hanford, the gardens balance structure and softness. Manicured hedges frame long vistas. Asian and European statuary punctuate quiet corners. Koi ponds reflect sky and foliage. A large hedge maze invites playful wandering, while expansive lawns offer room to pause and take in the broader composition.

Each garden room reveals itself gradually. In spring, bulbs and flowering trees carry the landscape in waves of color. Summer deepens the borders with layered perennials, ornamental grasses, and pollinator activity. By early fall, seed heads and warm light soften the edges, reminding visitors that gardens are living works in progress.

Despite its scale, Sycamore Hill feels intimate. It is not a park or a hiking trail—it is a cultivated landscape meant to be observed slowly. You walk, you study, you notice how repetition creates rhythm and how shrubs and mature trees anchor plantings. It is both inspiration and education for anyone who tends their own patch of earth.

Keep an eye out for the extensive statuary scattered throughout the grounds—classical figures, Asian influences, and unexpected pieces tucked into quiet corners. Part of the pleasure is discovery. You will not see them all at once; they reveal themselves as you wander.
