Just 10 miles east of Syracuse, Green Lakes State Park in Fayetteville is one of Central New York’s most striking natural landscapes. Two brilliant turquoise lakes sit within old-growth forest, creating a setting that feels almost tropical—yet distinctly upstate New York.
Why Visit

Green Lake and Round Lake are rare meromictic lakes, meaning their surface and deep waters do not mix in spring and fall. This unusual condition keeps the water exceptionally clear and gives it that luminous blue-green color.
Round Lake is designated a National Natural Landmark, recognized for its geological significance and the surrounding old-growth forest. Nearby, the grove known as the Tuliptree Cathedral rises in quiet grandeur, its towering tulip poplars forming a natural sanctuary.

What to Do

Walk the Lakeshore Trail
A three-mile trail loops around both lakes, hugging the shoreline and offering scenic views at nearly every turn. Interpretive signs explain the lakes’ unique geology and microbial mats. Additional trails extend into the surrounding forest, with approximately 15 miles available for hiking, trail running, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.

Swim at Green Lake
The sandy swimming beach on Green Lake is open seasonally and includes changing facilities and concessions. The water’s clarity makes it one of the most memorable swimming spots in the region.
Boat Rentals
To protect the lakes’ fragile ecosystem, private boats, kayaks, and canoes are not permitted. Rowboats and kayaks are available to rent from the boathouse between Memorial Day and Labor Day, weather permitting. Clear-bottom tandem kayaks are sometimes offered, allowing you to see into the lake’s striking depths.
Golf, Picnicking, and Play
The park also features an 18-hole golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones, picnic areas with grills, playgrounds, and open fields for relaxed afternoons outdoors.
Camping & Cabins
Seasonal campsites and cabins make it easy to extend your stay. Reservations are recommended in peak summer months.
Accessibility
An all-terrain beach wheelchair is available in season to assist with access to the beach and select trails.
