The Abbey of the Genesee is a place where silence feels intentional rather than empty. Set among open fields in rural Livingston County, this Trappist monastery offers visitors a chance to slow down, breathe deeply, and experience a rhythm of life shaped by prayer, work, and quiet hospitality.
Founded in 1951 by monks from the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky, the Abbey of the Genesee belongs to the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance—more commonly known as Trappists. The community follows a daily pattern of prayer known as the Liturgy of the Hours, gathering in the Abbey church before dawn and at regular intervals throughout the day. Guests are welcome to attend these services and simply sit, listen, and observe.
Many visitors first arrive for the well-known Monk’s Bread, baked on-site and sold in the small monastery store. But beyond the bread and bookstore lies something deeper: wide skies, cultivated fields, and the humbling presence of men who have chosen a life of contemplation in a world that rarely pauses.
Why Visit

- Experience authentic monastic life in Western New York
- Attend prayer services in a simple, peaceful chapel
- Walk the quiet grounds and country roads surrounding the Abbey
- Purchase fresh-baked Monk’s Bread and spiritual books
- Enjoy expansive rural views that shift beautifully with the seasons
This is not a tourist attraction in the typical sense. It is a working monastery. Visitors are guests in a space devoted first to prayer. The gift is not spectacle—it is stillness.

What to Do

Attend a Service
Guests may join the monks for prayer throughout the day. The early morning Vigils service begins before sunrise, followed by Lauds, Midday Prayer, Vespers, and Compline. You may sit quietly in the back and observe. No participation is required.

Visit the Abbey Store
The small on-site store sells Monk’s Bread in a variety of flavors, along with books, cards, and simple religious gifts. Bread availability can vary, especially before holidays.

Walk the Grounds
While much of the property is private, designated areas and surrounding country roads allow for peaceful walks. The landscape—rolling farmland, open sky, and distant tree lines—invites reflection.
