1. America 250: Take a Local Field Trip Through History
2026: America’s 250th Anniversary. As the United States marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the moment invites more than celebration—it offers a chance to explore the stories that shaped our nation, many of which can be found right here in Western New York.
Across Rochester and the surrounding region, historic sites, museums, and landscapes tell a broader story of American life—one that continues well beyond 1776. From the legacy of Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony to the Erie Canal’s role in shaping commerce and community, these places offer meaningful ways to connect with the past.
Consider planning a few local “field trips” to experience this history firsthand—walk through Mount Hope Cemetery, visit the Susan B. Anthony House, explore Ganondagan State Historic Site, or stand at High Falls where Rochester’s story began. Each stop adds another layer to understanding how the American story has unfolded over time.
Look for special exhibitions, events, and programs throughout 2026 as communities across the region mark this milestone.
