This year, the 4th of July falls on a Thursday, with family-fun festivities scheduled around Rochester from Saturday, June 29, to Sunday, July 7, 2024. If you’ve planned to take the week off for a vacation, here are eight ways to make the most of your time by combining traditional Independence Day celebrations with summer fun.
1. Rochester’s 4th of July Fireworks
July 4: Fireworks over the Downtown at 10 p.m. Get ready for a classic downtown fireworks extravaganza! The dazzling show will start at 10 p.m. and last for 15-20 minutes. The best spots to view the fireworks are from the Broad Street and Court Street bridges, which will be closed to vehicular traffic at 8 p.m. and have no parking. Consider using the Sister Cities Garage, Court Street Garage, or nearby street parking for convenient parking. cityofrochester.gov
Check your town’s community calendar or check out this D&C article, Fireworks near Rochester NY 2024: July 4th showtimes and more, for events taking place on, before, or after the 4th of July, including fireworks, parades, and other festivities.
2. Colonial Charm and 4th of July Traditions
July 4: Independence Day at Genesee Country Village & Museum. Experience colonial-era celebrations and learn about America’s history. Each 4th of July, the Genesee Country Village & Museum hosts a Naturalization Ceremony for roughly 50 new American Citizens. It reminds me that the path to citizenship is paved with hard work and determination. The ceremony is quite a thing to witness. It is also a day-long celebration of all things America, with a pie-eating contest, sack races, and a parade. gcvm.org
3. The National Pastime: We’re Talkin’ Baseball!
July 4–6: Rochester Red Wings vs. the Buffalo Bisons. On July 4, there will be an American flag giveaway, and the team will wear special jerseys, which will be auctioned off after the ball game. On July 5, it’s Military Appreciation Night, and on July 6, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra will perform. There will also be post-game fireworks each night for everyone to enjoy. milb.com
4. Take a Ride Back in Time
July 6: Trains & Trolleys at Twilight, presented by the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum and New York Museum of Transportation. Embark on a journey back in time and visit an old-fashioned trolley park located just 20 minutes south of downtown Rochester. Your adventure begins at the historic Industry Depot on Route 251, where you’ll board a vintage freight train for a scenic ride through the countryside. Upon reaching Midway, you’ll transfer to an authentic electric trolley that will take you to NYMT’s Trolley Park, where you can enjoy a complimentary ice cream and jazz concert. We encourage you to bring a lawn chair if you’d like. After your visit, you’ll board the trolley and train for the return trip to Industry Depot, taking in the beautiful sights and sounds of the rails at dusk. rochestertrainrides.com
5. Historic Battles Come Alive
July 5–7: Siege of Niagara 1759. Experience Old Fort Niagara’s most significant event of the year! Relive the historic siege of 1759, when British forces and their Native allies besieged the French-held Fort Niagara for 19 days. Hundreds of reenactors will come together at Old Fort Niagara to recreate this historic event. There will be battle reenactments, period merchants and artisans, as well as large living history camps.
6. Rock & Salsa Under the Stars
July 3: Concerts by the Shore. Enjoy a night of 60s and 70s rock with THE INVICTAS at Ontario Beach Park. Concerts at the Shore have been a Rochester tradition for over 35 years, offering enjoyable evenings on the shore of Lake Ontario on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. throughout the summer. Pack a picnic basket or enjoy dinner at nearby restaurants before the show, and finish with Abbott’s Frozen Custard for dessert. ontariobeachentertainment.org
July 4: Lincoln Hill, Canandaigua. Enjoy live music with ROC Star Academy and BB Dang, lawn games, fireworks, craft brews, and delicious food. Bring your family, lawn chairs, or picnic blankets, and make a day of it. lincolnhillfarms.com
July 5: Bands on the Bricks. Check out Latin Night at the City of Rochester Public Market. Bands on the Bricks is one of Rochester’s most popular free concert series, featuring national and local live music on five consecutive Friday nights in July and August. Food and drink vendors will also be available to complete your night. bandsonthebricksroc.com
7. Creative Connections & Artful Interactions
July 5: First Friday—Citywide Gallery Night. First Friday is a monthly citywide gallery night that encourages collaboration between small and mid-sized art venues in Rochester. This initiative showcases area artists and smaller arts institutions by promoting the First Friday evening of each month from 6–9 p.m. as a community night for experiencing art. Find a schedule, participating venues, and a map at firstfridayrochester.org.

People often ask me if I get free access to places while exploring. The answer is no unless I’m invited to previews or granted behind-the-scenes access as part of my media role. Generally, I don’t mention my project, Day Trips Around Rochester, NY, because I want the same experience you would have. I create and share content simply because it brings me joy. I would appreciate your support—a cup of coffee or two to help fuel future field trips—if you have found valuable information here that has helped you explore the Rochester area.
